Inclusion Advocate: Sedef Erken's Impact on Autistic Education
Talent seeks purpose. Our team suggested I visit Babale, a gift shop in Tbilisi to see an example of this exquisite union. Someone who had visited earlier shared paintings that seem to escape their frames and peek out into the world around them, socks that contain upon them artworks like pieces of puzzles , and vibrant scarves whispering tales of warmth and comfort.
Babale was more than a store; it was a testament to the spirit of the Georgian Down Syndrome Association and their dedication to providing employment and social support to individuals with Down Syndrome. Unfortunately when I got there, I googled the address to find the shop permanently closed. I was disappointed about this and thought about similar organisations in India (@jaivakeel, @weaekarmann, @muskaanpaepid, @tickleyourart , @pumpkinpatch.alyx) and the team of artisans who may have found purpose and fulfillment through their work. Their creations are not mere products; they are tangible expressions of a deep form of inclusion. Interacting with the artisans and teams at these orgs has been a humbling experience. Their art and products play a role in helping adapt to a labyrinthine society. Their artwork talks of the intricate patterns revealed the complexity and beauty of their individuality
I spent the rest of the day with Sonit, an ex-colleague and dear friend from Mumbai, who came down to Georgia especially to support the rally and our efforts towards exploring the idea of an #inclusiveduniya. He is one of our early supporters and exemplifies the belief that everyone, regardless of their abilities, deserves an opportunity to express themselves and contribute to society. I have seen him do this as a colleague, leader, father and friend, offering solace, acceptance, and a sense of belonging to all, bringing out the best in all.
What untapped potential resides within us individuals, with/without IDDs, and how might we express it if we are provided a space that embraces us as “home”? And what can we do to help each one live to the best of their potential?
